The Development of Snuggle Wraps™
My son, Kyle, was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate on November 29th, 1997. He had his first surgery at 3 months old to repair his lip. For several weeks following the surgery he was required to wear arm immobilizers to keep him from bending his arms and damaging his newly repaired lip. The hospital-issued restraints were made out of tongue depressors covered in a hot, scratchy fabric and had strings on them to be tied onto the arms. These restraints constantly slipped off and were very difficult to put back on. On top of the rashes and irritation, the tops of the tongue depressors were pinching my son's skin and leaving marks on his arms!
I thought I had found a solution about a week into my son's discomfort when I came across another type of arm immobilizers. These had cute little prints on them which I liked, but looked like large casts. These had a shoulder strap to help them to not slip off the arms. The strap connected the two immobilizers and went over his shoulder across the back of his neck. The shoulder strap troubled me because I thought it could be a strangulation hazard. These did prove to be better in construction than the originals, but still very uncomfortable for my son as they were very bulky and hot! Even with the shoulder strap, they still would not stay on. It was still a constant battle to keep them on his arms.
Frustrated and amazed that in this day and age arm immobilizers were so poor and outdated, I wanted to come up with a solution so we would not have to use these kinds again. While sitting in a rocking chair, holding my son and looking at these hot bulky things on my son's arm I came up with an idea. This idea was to incorporate open, ventilated areas to eliminate the overheating and heat rashes and it would adjust around the wrist so they wouldn't slip off. This design allowed me to use Velcro wrist and upper arm straps, similar to the concept of a wrist watch, which kept them from slipping off over the hand. I made a pair for my sons' second surgery for when he was 11 months old. I was amazed at the difference in his comfort which made the whole recovery process so much easier. He did not get overheated, they were a lot less bulky, easier to use, and stayed on. I did not constantly have to worry about his comfort and whether or not they were still on his arms. After showing these to a local support group, Charleston Clefts, Inc., at a board meeting they strongly encouraged me to have them made for other kids. They knew that there were many other children (and parents) that would benefit from my version of pediatric arm immobilizers. They gave me the confidence to pursue making my version available for other children to use. Through literally tons of blood, sweat and tears (many, many tears) Snuggle Wraps have evolved over the years and are now "state of the art" arm immobilizers. I love to get out that original pair I made for my son and think of the journey that I went through to make Snuggle Wraps what they are today. I am proud to say that all kids have the option of using Snuggle Wraps now too, thanks to Charleston Clefts, Inc., but mostly thanks to my son Kyle.
